3/07/2016. Elstead Paper Boat Race, Elstead Moat. To the victors go the spoils, except in this case if you win you get your boat sunk, whilst you are still in it.

So Sunday, looked in the diary, nothing until tea time, & then it is time for tea. So a trip out to the Elstead Moat, for a Paper Boat Race. Yep you read that correctly a Paper Boat Race, boats made of paper & card on real wet water. When I saw the name of it I assumed wrongly that it would be a kind of poo sticks race with boats made from a single sheet of A4 paper.

I was informed that the paper boats could carry 4 or more people,  Yes, Paper Boats, with passengers, that sounds like it wouldn’t last very long? You’d be right, for the most part the boats end up as soggy wrecks that end up being dragged around the course by the contestants that expected to be sitting in them.

Anyway, Elstead provided me with enough excitement to last the couple of hours that I was there. As they say “all good, clean, family fun”.  I didn’t know what to expect, but it was certainly very colourful. In the last race of the day, made up by mainly adults the objective was to sink the boat that is in front of you. Which made for a splashing time.

The theme this year (apparently they have a theme every year, but then it would appear everything does) was William Shakespeare. It looked almost enough fun to make me wish I was 30+ years younger, only almost though.

I had one once….. this Saturday I had 6 starting with a ceremony at the Camberley War Memorial in remembrance of those that died at the Battle Of the Somme, a festival at the Crimea Pub in Aldershot (including the handing over of a new car to Volunteer Blood Couriers), a street parade, a GV and some cricket, all whilst dodging in and out of the rain.

Since I posted about work, so on Friday I had to get the car serviced have an eye check & photograph Guildford City taking part in the “Over The Top” football tournament to commemorate the Battle of the Somme, well without the car nothing was going to happen, so collected that at about lunch-time, Eye Check up at 14.45 then raced up to Surrey Sports Park.

Pleased to say that Guildford City made it to the final where they were beaten by an Army Team, but as City only had a bare 11 players not to shabby, & you know that the Army Teams are always going to be super fit. I only saw the last 3 minutes of the final, and they looked a little leggie, but then they are only a few days into Pre-Season.

Smuggling Cars

I have lost count at the number of times my cars (not just this one) have appeared in newspaper articles either in GVs or else bits of the car to illustrate a story, most often a fuel filler or exhaust pipe.

In fact I know that it used to be done in a competitive spirit when I work with a team of photographers at an agency. I think that I have probably smuggled my cars into most of the nationals over the last 20+ years.
