Out working today, mainly been loitering in the East End of London, well Shoreditch area, freaking hole of a place, but I have had the opportunity to do a couple of test frames with the new Sigma 500mm F4.5 EX DG HSM and have to report that I am quite impressed with the handling of the lens, easy enough to hand-hold the AF is quick enough, although I won’t be able to do any critical analysis of the results until I get home and review the images on the big screen on the G5.
The lens balances well in the hand, especially when bolted to an EOS1D mkII body, not sure how it would feel with something smaller and lighter. It is reasonably easy to hand-hold, unlike the Canon 400mm F2.8 which at 6 kilos is a bit too much. I also like that fact that the lens is black rather than the Canon’s off-white finish, it just makes it a little more discreete.
Having had a look at the images, there is nothing wrong with this peice of glass, however for a full evaluation I will need to try at something like the BTCC. Must remember to request a press pass for the Thruxton round!
